The USA and UK are two of the world’s most popular destinations for international students. Both countries have much to offer, but their educational systems are quite different. So, what are the differences between the USA and UK educational systems, and which is best for you?

1.    When you Choose your Degree Subject

The point at which you choose your degree subject differs significantly between the USA and UK higher education systems. When applying to universities in the United Kingdom, you must first decide what you want to study. You don’t just apply to study at the University of York; you apply to study Business or Law at the University of York, for example.

There is some flexibility in changing your subject, but you must usually do so within your first semester. All of your classes will be related to your major.

By contrast, in the United States, you have until the end of your second year of undergraduate study to declare a major (the subject your degree will be in). Instead, you will study a core curriculum of arts, humanities, and science classes in addition to the subjects of your choice.

This allows you to explore various disciplines and determine which one best suits you before deciding on a major.

2.    Duration of Study

Another significant difference is the length of time required to complete your degree in both the USA and UK. Because of the variety of subjects you will study at a US university, your degree will take longer to complete.

A bachelor’s degree in the United States typically takes four years, whereas it takes three years in the United Kingdom. Similarly, master’s degrees in the United Kingdom typically last one year, whereas master’s programs in the United States typically last two years.

Each system has advantages and disadvantages. If you aren’t sure what you want to study yet and don’t have any time constraints, the flexibility of the US system may be ideal for you. However, if you know what subject interests you the most and don’t want to waste time or aren’t interested in studying other subjects, you might want to choose a UK university.

3.    Cost of Degrees

Many students consider the cost of a degree when deciding where to study in both the USA and UK. Tuition fees will be a significant investment wherever you choose to study, but typical costs vary between countries like the USA and UK.

In the United Kingdom, tuition fees for home students are capped at £9,000 per year. While there are no such restrictions on how much international students can pay, the average annual fee is between £10,000 and £20,000.

Costs vary greatly between universities in the United States, but international students can expect to pay between $25,000 and $45,000 per year to study for a bachelor’s degree at a public university, and up to $55,000 per year or more at some private institutions.

The length of your degree also influences the cost. Because US degrees typically take one year longer than their UK counterparts, you will need to budget for an additional year of study.

4.    Teaching and Assessment Style

Another difference between the higher education systems in the USA and UK is the typical teaching style. Degree programs in the United Kingdom are typically lecture-based, with some small-group tutorials thrown in for good measure.

Because UK universities emphasize self-directed learning, you may have few ‘contact hours’ with your tutors when attending lectures or seminars, depending on the subject you study.

In contrast, US students have much busier schedules. They usually have more homework to do and more classes to attend. Those classes will also frequently include a lot of active discussion between students and professors.

In fact, your participation in classes will account for a large portion of your grade at a US university! The majority of your grade in a UK degree will be based on end-of-year exams.

These two teaching and assessment methods will appeal to different people. If you are an independent learner who is comfortable taking exams, you may prefer to study in the UK; if you prefer a more collaborative study environment, you may prefer to study in the USA.

5.    Accommodation

Similarly, how much you enjoy spending your free time with other people may influence your choice. Both USA and UK typically provide on-campus housing for first-year students, but one significant difference is how housing is shared among students.

During their first year, students in the United States are very likely to share a bedroom with at least one other student. This is ideal if you enjoy spending the majority of your time with other people your roommate may be your natural best friend!

Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, very few universities provide shared rooms. Instead, having your own bedroom in a shared flat is much more common. Alternatively, many universities and student housing providers in the UK provide studio apartments where you can live alone.

6.    Sports Culture

Another difference between USA and UK educational systems is college sports, These are a very important part of university life in the United States. University sports teams draw large crowds to stadiums, and inter-university games are broadcast on television. Talented athletes can become local celebrities and even receive significant tuition discounts!

All of this could make the United States a very appealing destination for students with a strong interest in sports or who want to play high-profile games. Professional teams frequently select new players from university leagues, so if you want to pursue a sporting career after graduation, attending a US university could be a great option.

This is not to say that opportunities for aspiring athletes do not exist in the UK. Most UK universities offer a variety of sports teams to which you can join and compete in university leagues. However, because university-level sport is not such a big part of the culture in the United Kingdom, it’s much easier to avoid it on UK campuses if it’s not something you’re interested in.

Is the US or UK Higher Education System right for me?

These are just a few of the differences between the higher education systems in the USA and UK. Finally, the best study destination for you will be determined by your interests and priorities.

If you are passionate about one or two subjects and want to complete your degree in the shortest amount of time and on the smallest possible budget, a UK university may be the best option for you. The UK system is also ideal for self-directed learning.

However, if you want to explore a variety of subjects, have a more interactive learning experience, or are intrigued by the idea of American campus life, the USA is the way to go.

If you want to study abroad as an international student, you’ll find a large amount of information on our blog. Where to go for study. When to apply.  But before you read any of that, you must first answer the most important question: why study abroad? What are the amazing reasons to study abroad?

We’ll look at why you should think about studying at a university or college outside of your home country. Here are the five amazing reasons to study abroad, ranging from self-improvement to self-confidence

1. The Potential for a World-Class Education

If education is important to you (and if you’re reading this, it probably is), you may want to look beyond your local options. You may have already fantasized about attending an internationally recognized university in another country. Perhaps you’ve looked into universities and colleges in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia, or Ireland.

Each country has its own educational system, with different perspectives, teaching styles, and learning opportunities. Relying on your local education system may limit the type and scope of study you can pursue. When you choose to study abroad, your options become almost limitless.

Colleges and universities all over the world offer world-class, internationally recognized education. Many of them provide:

  • High student satisfaction levels
  • More personalized attention (smaller class sizes and student-to-faculty ratios)
  • Built-in co-ops, placements, or work experience
  • Unique research opportunities

Studying abroad allows you to learn things you would never have had the opportunity to learn otherwise. That alone makes studying abroad a valuable option for anyone looking to broaden their educational horizons.

2. Studying Abroad Forces You to Grow

Personal growth is difficult to define. When people talk about what helped define them and move their lives forward, they frequently describe experiences like these:

  • Gaining new perspectives
  • Trying new things
  • Traveling to new places
  • Living in a new country
  • Learning a new language

The keyword here is “new.” Growing entails taking on new challenges and stepping outside of your comfort zone. And what better way to experience all of these things than by studying abroad?

Here’s the truth: studying abroad is intense, demanding, and challenging in so many ways. You must understand this before proceeding and be prepared to rise to the occasion. Becoming an international student is a fantastic way to “choose the challenge.”

You might discover a level of independence and self-confidence you didn’t know you had. You’ll be able to say, “I did that. That was my choice.”

3. To Kickstart Your Career

Let’s come back to a more grounded reason now. Personal growth is amazing, but it cannot pay the bills, most students’ top concern when deciding what to study is, how will this help me get the job I want later?

Fortunately, many study-abroad destinations offer excellent job opportunities for international students. The world requires skilled labour. Your skills may be in high demand depending on what you intend to study. While studying, you can often find and work a part-time job to help cover your living expenses and build your resume. You might even be able to find work in your field(or in a related field). Working while studying, in any case, helps you develop soft skills and network for future career opportunities.

In terms of staying in the country and working after graduation, many countries provide excellent post-study work visa options. check this out:

  • Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit
  • The United Kingdom’s Graduate Visa
  • Australia’s Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)
  • The United States OPT (Optional Practical Training)
  • Ireland’s Third-Level Graduate Program

Employers value people who have put themselves out there, learned new skills, and shown dedication to their studies, regardless of where they work. Studying abroad teaches the same skills that are frequently required to succeed in fast-paced work environments. These qualities include improvisation, collaboration, open-mindedness, willingness to learn, and adaptability to changing roles. There is no such thing as a guaranteed job.

4. Study Abroad Changes Your Life

Anyone can travel, but it is often enjoyable and temporary. It won’t change your day-to-day life. When you get home, you’ll go back to your safe bed and your normal routine.

Moving to a new location amplifies the experience of traveling and immersing yourself in a new culture. The additional goal and responsibility of finishing your education raise the stakes.

Instead of meeting other travelers and forgetting them a week later, you’ll meet other students your age. People you meet while studying abroad will become your local support network and, in many cases, lifelong friends.

Instead of hearing locals speak English and possibly picking up a few words, you’ll be educated in it! It’s amazing how quickly you can learn a new language when you spend your days reading, writing, and speaking it.

Instead of spending a week in a new city wondering what it’s like to live there, you’ll be living there. That will become your life, and for the time being, that new location will be your home.

So, what does that imply? This experience will shape you no matter where you go or what you study. If you want to learn new things and start a new chapter in your life, there isn’t a better way to do so than by studying abroad.

5. For Yourself

The most important reason to study abroad is to improve one’s own life. Parents, teachers, and friends will all have an opinion about your decision to study in a new country. But in the end, you must make this decision for yourself.

Nobody knows you better than you, so only you have the choice of choosing to study abroad. Do your own research, weigh your options, and make the best decision for you. If you decide to take the next step, our team is here to help.

Tip: You’ll notice that we didn’t include “to immigrate to a new country” as a reason on this list. That should not be your motivation for studying abroad! Every country has its own immigration process, and it is never guaranteed. You never want a country’s government to think you’re only studying there to stay permanently.

Having said that, there are numerous routes to permanent residency for international student graduates. Do your research, learn more from reliable sources such as immigration attorneys, and living in a new country could be in your future!

If you want to study abroad it literally means you are starting over from scratch, abandoning everything you know, and embracing new experiences. The path of an international student is difficult, with obstacles at every turn.

However, with new challenges come new experiences. Opportunities to learn and grow. And, as countless students around the world will tell you, it’s well worth it.

8.    Resilience

You probably had a lot to overcome during your time studying abroad: nothing valuable comes easily. Whether it was missing home or overcoming a language barrier, you must have showed significant amounts of resilience along the way – you’re still standing, right? This will impress employers because it demonstrates your ability to deal with change and hardship, utilizing them to your advantage rather than allowing them to be your downfall.

Are you thinking about studying abroad in the United States of America? In this article, we’ll examine your possibilities of working while studying in the USA and how to gain work experience after you graduate.

Consider the degree you want to obtain first. In the US, colleges and universities provide bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Less popular alternatives include diplomas and graduate certificates.

We’ve outlined your study abroad timeframe and the potential evolution of your employment prospects below. We’ll start with your enrollment as an international student and wrap up with some tips on how you might prepare to apply for citizenship in the future.

Working and Studying in the USA

You’ll first sign up for a post-secondary course of study. F-1 visas (for academic students) or M-1 visas are typically used by foreign students to enter the US (for vocational students). You must apply to a college or university that has been authorized international student admission by the US government.

Students on F-1 visas may not work off-campus during their first year of studying in the USA. But students on F-1 visas are permitted to work:

  • Up to 20 hours a week during ordinary full-time semesters,
  • Up to 40 hours per week during regular holidays like the winter and summer break,

Here are the three categories of off-campus work available to F-1 students after the first academic year is over:

  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT) can be completed either during or after a student has finished their program
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Optional Practical Training Extension (OPT).

However, any student that holds an M-1 visa can only start practical training after their graduation. Off-campus training must be related to the field of study for both F-1 and M-1 students. The Designated School Official of their institution and USCIS must authorize all training.

We advise looking for jobs long before graduating because international students only have a short window of time to find post-graduation work.

How Does OPT Operate Before/ or After Studying in the USA?

Before or after studying in the USA you have the right to participate in OPT (Optional Practical Training) for up to 12 months before and/or after completing your academic degree if you are able to find full-time employment in your field. In other words, you don’t need a new visa to work in the United States for a short while.

However, the maximum of 20 hours of work per week still applies when school is in session. Any time spent on OPT while still in school counts towards the maximum 12-month allowance. When is on break for the summer, you are permitted to work full-time 40 hours a week.

As a student, you have the option of finishing your OPT full-time or part-time during and/or after your academic program. Whatever option you select, keep in mind that you will lose your right to OPT after graduation if you use up all of your OPT time while studying.

Did you complete a study program from one of the STEM Designated Degree Programs List? You can be eligible for a 24-month extension to your post-graduation OPT. For further information, see the US Citizenship and Immigration Services’ STEM OPT page

Applying for Work Visas Before/ or After Studying in the USA

While you are on an F-1 student visa, your employer has the opportunity to file for an H1-B visa on your behalf. They might carry out this action while you are on OPT or afterward.

They might carry out this action while you are on OPT or afterward. For new foreign workers, the H1-B visa is a visa lottery.

There is a yearly cap of 65,000 H1-B visas granted, and graduates with a master’s degree (or higher) from a US academic institution are eligible for 20,000 additional. However,  there are more applicants than the available spots. A lottery is used to issue H1-B visas because 308,613 people registered for the financial year 2022.

After studying in the USA you can stay and work in the US for up to three years if you are granted an H1-B visa. Although this period may be extended, it typically cannot exceed six years. Your employer has can take other visa routes if your H1-B is not granted.

It’s important to note that you might be able to obtain a cap-gap extension if you currently hold an F-1 student visa, and have filed an H1-B petition and change-of-status request, but your F-1 status will end before your request for change of status is approved.

Deciding to Stay After Studying in the USA

Your employer may submit an application for a Green Card on your behalf while you are employed in the US on an H1-B visa (Permanent Resident Card). You can remain permanently and work if you have a green card after studying in the USA. Individual Green Cards, on the other hand, must be renewed after 10 years.

Patience is key when applying for a Green Card. The processing time ranges from four to seven months. You can stay in the US while your status is pending.

As you prepare for your journey as an international student, we hope that this timeline and the information on working and studying in the USA will be helpful. If you need help with your study abroad application processing kindly click here.

Proof Of Means of Financial Support

The things you should take note of for the proof of means of financial support is to make you and or all your sponsor have enough funds to support you and still be able to take care of other financial responsibilities they have. Although the idea is to be able to show that you have enough funds for all the costs of your study in Canada.

The total of your study expenses is the total of your tuition usually for the first year only even if your program is more than one year, plus your living expenses in the first year and other additional expenses like flight fees.

*       For example, if the total funds you need for tuition + Living expenses + other expenses for yourself or a family member who is a dependent is $40,000 CAD, you need to show that you still have something extra.

*       If you have a dependent going with you then you will have to show that you have enough funds to cover their living expenses in the first year including your own tuition, living expenses, and any other fees.

*       If you want to know the amount required for your living expenses and documents to show, you can check the IRCC Website here.

After you have proof that you have enough funds to cover your fees like tuition, living expenses, and any other expenses, etc. in the first year, prepare and present any other additional assets and source of income to show where your fees in the second year and other subsequent years will come from without having to work in Canada.

The Visa office is usually concerned about seeing that the funds for your first-year program are actually available in your account, they are also interested to know that you or your sponsor have genuine sources of income to show you will not be stranded in Canada in the following years.

The various ways you can show these sources of income are through your personal and economic assets such as:

*      Proof of income and investments from the applicant or sponsor(s)

*      Proof of property documents with the property valuation or proof of ownership

*      Document of business ownership for the applicant or sponsor(s)

*      Then any other sources of income or economic assets that can be easily converted to cash like rental properties, fixed investment, pension funds, etc.

ALSO READ: HOW TO APPLY AND STUDY IN CANADA

Add all these documents to your statement of account or other proof of funds you are presenting and provide them as part of your proof of funds.

Make sure you label and list them accordingly in your proof of funds cover so that the visa officers can clearly see them and know how to identify the additional documents in your proof of funds document.

Sponsors can be:

*      Scholarships or Grants

*      Self Sponsor or Spouse

*      Parents or Partners

*      Direct Siblings

*      Employers

*      Close Relatives( who can proof that they are genuinely ready to support you)

*      Study Loans

Your sponsors could also be from multiple sources. For example, you may have

*      Partial Scholarship + Support from parents

*      Scholarship + Siblings

*      Two of your siblings sponsoring you etc.

Your sponsor should have funds in excess of what you need not exactly the amount you need for your tuition and living expenses in their account. This is very important because convincing enough to say all they have is what they are giving to you, they have other financial responsibilities too even if they are your parents.

International Passport

You will scan the data page of your current passport, stamped pages/visas, and stamped pages of your previous passports to show your travel history if you have any.

Medical Exam

For your Canadian study permit, you will need to do this, although you can wait for the IRRC to request the medical or you may decide to do an upfront medical exam. Although it is advisable you do an upfront medical exam to reduce your application processing time.

The upfront medical exam is compulsory for you if you are a Nigerian applicant and you want to use the Nigerian Student Express(NSE) route.

All other Categories of applicants can also do the upfront medical or wait until they receive the request for the medical from the IRCC. Although doing an upfront medical or NOT, it won’t have any effect on your application. If your application gets to the stage where the medical examination is needed, IRCC will send you a letter instructing you to go and get one.

If eventually, you decided to get an upfront medical after your application has been submitted, you can go and get one and then send in your eMedical sheet to IRCC using the IRCC web form here.

For more information on where to do the medical examination check the IRCC website here.

The Nigerian Student Express

For more information on what the Nigerian Student Express is all about check here

Apparently, NSE doesn’t have a separate application process, but you may be contacted to provide some documents for the NSE after submitting your Canadian study permit application.

If found eligible for the NSE application route, note that using the NSE for application is not compulsory, it is optional.

Client Information/Letter of Explanation/SOP/Study Plan

If it is stated on your application portal that it is optional, please don’t ignore it. This is where you need to provide additional documents. Your letter of explanation/SOP/Study Plan, police report, certificates/transcript/resume/etc should be converted into a single document.

There are some important things you need to address in your Canadian study permit Letter of Explanation/SOP/Study Plan.

Firstly, the Letter of explanation/SOP/Study Plan must be a clear, concise, and precise summary and any additional clarification/information.

Arrange the letter very well and analyze it in the sub-section to make it presentable.

A letter of explanation can also be referred to as a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for Canadian Study Permit Visa applications.

Some of the important things to address in this letter are;

  • An introduction about yourself
  • Why the program and why the school you apply to?
  • How the program you are coming to study will be beneficial to you and your country upon the completion of your program
  • Showing proof of financial standing
  • Your professional experience, Home ties, Travel experience if any

Keep in mind to make sure you are only presenting relevant documents that will support the success of your visa application because every document placeholder in your application will only be able to accept a doc size of 4MB.

Getting a Canadian study permit is competitive and can be delayed too, also the rate at which Canada visa refusal is high. The quality of the document you are submitting has a big impact on the success of your application. Although, Canada needs people in their country that do not mean they will accept anyhow person.

The goal of many international students is not only to come to study in Canada but to also have the opportunity to work and stay back in Canada, perhaps becoming permanent residents. It was confirmed by the Canadian Bureau for international education that about 60% of international students plan to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Apparently many students are already aware that the length of their post-graduate work permit (PGWP) is determined by the duration of their study in Canada. A postgraduate work permit(PGWP) allows international students to stay back in Canada to work after their studies and acquire the necessary work experience needed for their career, and permanent resident application and also equipped them for the job market.

So, if you apply for a one-year program automatically you are eligible for a one-year postgraduate permit and if it is a 2 years study program,  you will get up to 3 years of PGWP which makes you eligible to stay back in Canada.

For more information on PGWP including the process and requirements click here

Now let’s dive into how you can stay back in Canada after your studies.

Stay Back in Canada After Studies Possible Options

If your desire is to get a permanent residence permit status to remain permanently in Canada after you do a one-year program, then all you need to do is to figure out how to become a permanent resident before you complete the one-year program. Although for a student to work on a permanent residence permit during the one-year PGWP, can be quite time-consuming and difficult, especially for students who needed at least one year of work experience in Canada to be eligible for permanent residence in Canada.

Apparently, some students have been able to apply successfully in the past and they were able to submit at least a full application before the one-year work permit elapses. But before you can do this you need to be prepared and plan well. Firstly, one of the plans option to adopt, is that you have to know your permanent residence options and make a full permanent residence application before the one-year expires. If you can do this successfully, then you to apply for a bridging open work permit(BOWP) that will allow you to still continue working whilst the time a decision is made on your permanent residence application.

Note that your PGWP is only issued once in a lifetime but with BOWP you will keep working because you have a permanent residence application being processed. Remember it is stated that you must have submitted a full permanent residence application not only by expressing interest or setting up a permanent residence profile that makes you only eligible for BOWP.

For more information on the BOWP, the process, and requirements in Canada click here

Many students that are able to submit a full permanent residence application during their one-year study for PGWP, either get a job early before or after completing their programs and they started working when they applied for a post-graduate work permit or they might need the Canadian degree to get more points for another permanent residence program like express entry.

Also, it is advisable for students applying for a one-year program to consider studying in a province that has student nominee programs that do not require students to have a full year of Canadian working experience. For example in some provinces like Saskatchewan you only need 6 months of post-study work experience to be eligible for a student nomination for permanent residence. So if you are that type of student who before you can become a permanent resident will need a nomination it is advisable you consider this, or know your options and plan ahead.

If you check the available options and it is kind of looking difficult to pull through to get a permanent residence with your one-year PGWP that means you have to adopt the option of doing 2nd program for another year to make it 2years of study after the first program. If you can adopt this option, you can combine the two degrees to get up to 3 years of work permit.

Although, the second program must be done before applying for the PGWP. Basically, some people referred to it as a 1+1 study in Canada. You can pursue the second program anywhere in Canada, it could be in another school or another city/province. So far it is a DLI eligible for PGWP.

Also be reminded that for you to pursue the 2nd program you will be needing proof of funds, and other documents to extend your work permit, although it is easier to apply for a work permit since you will be applying from inside Canada. If eventually, you didn’t end up getting a permanent residence permit after you got a one-year PGWP or submitting at least a full permanent residence application to get a bridging open work permit BOWP.

Here are some options left for you to stay back in Canada

  • Return to study again and get a new study permit but unfortunately, you won’t get another PGWP afterward.
  • Get a separate work permit by looking for a job/employer to sponsor you
  • Get a spouse/partner who is a permanent resident to sponsor you for permanent residence
  • Explore the option of applying for a visitor’s record to maintain valid status because without this you cannot work legally but you can remain legally in Canada to explore your option of PR.

So if otherwise, you will be required to leave Canada.

You can explore all these methods to be able to stay back in Canada after your studies. Do you have a low grade like 2:2 or a second class lower in your previous degree, OND, HND and you are considering coming to study in Canada for a Master’s degree?

This information is for you.

Note that admission into graduate programs(masters/PhDs) in Canada is highly competitive. A minimum of 70-75% CGPA is the commonly required grade. This is on a 3.5/5.0 CGPA scale. Additionally, Applicants who successfully apply, get an offer, and some they offered entrance funding based on merit, it is either they have a higher grade or also those going for research-based programs.

 Reasons for this:

  1. Canada has up to 100+ universities
  2. Not all the universities in Canada offer master’s/PhDs
  3. Not all the universities in Canada will offer your course/program of interest
  4. Among all the universities that will offer your program of interest will have the number of students they can admit per intake
  5. There will be a tendency that students will apply more than the expected numbers

Typically, Canadian schools do not accept HNDs for Masters/Ph.D. The master’s degree requirement for admission is usually a 4 years BSc degree, In addition to your overall BSc grades, some universities will also focus on the grade from the last two years semesters of your BSc degree.

If you want to beat the odds to study in Canada with a low BSc grade, or OND/HND continue reading.

Do you want to come to study in Canada with your OND/HND or 2;2 CGPA/ Low BSc grade and you are looking for an easy route, the only means is for you to apply for a graduate certificate program or equivalent. It can also be referred to as Post graduate diploma (PGD) or Post Baccalaureate Diploma.

This is a good option for those with low grades or OND/HND. The program also attracts a Post graduate work permit (PGWP) and every other benefit that is available for international students if they get an admission offer for a graduate certificate program or PGD.

If you have decided to explore a harder route to apply for a master’s/PhD program, you can because it is not something that is impossible. Some people have adopted this harder route in the past but the truth is they use more than their low grades. Let me give you hints on some things they use to back up their low grades and position themselves for the opportunity which results in their successful admission applications.

Some of the things to do:

  • Get yourself a supervisor for a research-based master’s program alongside a research and publication portfolio
  • Show proof that you have a professional related experience
  • There are lower-ranked schools you can apply to
  • Write standardized tests like GMAT, GRE, or IELTS and pass them, if it is required for your course/program of interest
  • Arranged well-prepared documents like your CV, SOP, and Reference letters

In addition, here are some schools you can study in Canada that have been considerate to accept international students with lower grades ( like 2:2 or second-class lower) to apply for a master’s degree program.

  • Royal Roads University
  • University of Canada West
  • Saint Mary’s University
  • University of Regina
  • Memorial University
  • Mount Saint Vincent University
  • Thomson Rivers University
  • Bishop’s University
  • Canadian Mennonite University
  • Crandall University
  • Saint Paul University
  • University of Prince Edward Islands
  • Brandon University

And as earlier stated, those students who were admitted through this route came to the admission table with more than low grades. Therefore check some of the schools mentioned, check their admission requirements, update your profile and see if you stand a chance to be admitted to study in Canada.

However, all these graduate certificate programs are not meant for students with ND/HND or BSc low grades alone. They are programs that are very practical and offer hands-on training. So students with 2(second-class upper) and first-class CGPAS can decide to apply for the program if they don’t want to do a master’s directly.

Graduate certificate programs or postgraduate diplomas are mostly offered by Canadian colleges and some Canadian universities also offer them too. The duration of the programs varies, it could be 2years or one-year maximum depending on the program you’re applying for and the schools where it is being offered.

Lastly, take note of these important things

Note that, it is highly recommended for an international student who wants to study in Canada to apply to an approved designated learning institution that would make you eligible for a post-graduate work permit if you’re planning to stay back in Canada after your study.

Check here if you want to know a school that is a designated learning institution and if their programs are marked for a post-graduate work permit. I hope you will find this useful in some ways, and I wish you all the best in your application to study in Canada.

Let’s talk about the questionnaires you need to answer before you start your study abroad application

1. What Program/Course do you want to Study and at What Level? (Undergraduate or Graduate)?

Give answer to the following questions yourself:

  • What’s my educational level?
  • What professional job am I doing presently?
  • What are my future goals or where do I see myself in the future?
  • Which programs suit my future goals?
  • What is my interest?

Think about this very before you proceed with your study application

2.    Check if any Canadian institutions are offering the program of your interest?

At this point, obviously, this is where google will be helpful. For example, if you want to study a Master’s in economics just search for a Master’s in economics program in Canada, and google will bring up enough information you can choose from.

3.    Know the Cost and Requirements to Study in Canada

Narrow your options based on the information you found on Google and check the specific requirements at each university that offers the program. Check for the required average grade, tuition, available funding, application fees, intake, deadlines, etc.

4.    Are you Qualified to Study in Canada?

Now that you know the admission requirements, you will know whether to proceed with the application process or not. Admission requirements vary by program/university, but if you are applying for an undergraduate program, your high school results will be the main focus. The type of program/university you can study will be determined by how good your high school result should be.

A minimum average of C4 in English is what most Institutions required if you are applying from Nigeria. If you have anything lower than that, it will be advisable you try some universities in Atlantic Canada or colleges that offer undergraduate programs.

If you are applying for a graduate study like a Master’s or PH.D. program. there are 6 requirements needed:

A. Your grade

B. Statement of purpose

C. Cv

D. Letter of recommendation

E. Proposed research if applying for thesis-based programs

F. English proficiency if your previous degree was not taught in English

Additionally, some business/finance-related programs may require standardized results such as GMAT or GRE. make sure you check the requirements for every course/program/university and provide the requirements accurately before applying.

A.    Your grade

Your credentials do not need to go through the evaluation and assessment stage before you can apply for admission into any Canadian university. But certificates and transcripts from your previous degree will be needed for a successful application.

master/PH.D. in Canada are also competitive. Gaining admission depends on your CGPA. The minimum grade required is a CGPA of not less than 70-75% on a scale of 5.0% CGPA or at least 3.5, successful applicants that get entrance funding are those with higher grades.

If you couldn’t get this, there are other options.

Masters/PH.D. for students with low grades

Note that they always attached more importance to the cumulative average in the last two years of undergraduate study when reviewing graduate study applications.

therefore if you have a strong grade for the last two years or evidence of professional experience and research productivity, you may decide to give it a trial.

Additionally, you might decide to apply to schools that are not popular or schools that required you to get a research supervisor before you can apply for admission. This can increase your chance because your supervisor might back your application with more words during the application reviewing stage.

Summarily, here are some things you can do to increase your chances of studying abroad with low grades:

  • Acquire professional working experience could be volunteering.
  • Applying to a lower-ranked institution
  • Build research and publication portfolio
  • Apply for other degrees that are higher than a bachelor’s degree, not a master’s degree
  • You can write exams like GRE, GMAT, or IELTS and score high marks
  • Get a research supervisor
  • Apply to government-based institutions in the USA or Europe/Australia
  • Build your skills as you earn your degrees

In addition, there are some schools in Canada that international students with lower grades ( like 2:2 or second-class lower) can apply to for a master’s degree program.

Examples:

  • Royal Roads University
  • University of Canada West
  • Saint Mary’s University
  • University of Regina
  • Memorial University
  • Mount Saint Vincent University
  • Thomson Rivers University
  • Crandall University
  • Saint Paul University
  • University of Prince Edward Islands

More also, most students that got admission into the Master’s and PH.D. programs in Canada with low grades backed it up with a well-prepared admission application. They also complimented their low grades with one or more of the followings:

  • Proof of higher grades from the last two years
  • Taking the required standardized test like GMAT, GRE, and IELTS.
  • Well-prepared documents like SOPs, recommendation letters, and CVs
  • Research productivity, publication, and good research proposal portfolio
  • Getting a research professor that is ready to supervise them

You can do numerous things to get into a graduate program like Master’s/PHDs in Canada with low grades.

Getting admission into graduate programs in Canada is tough but showing the admission committee more than the grades why you fit for the programs, and why you are a choice candidate is what it takes to succeed in getting admission.

The work is in your hands now that you have to know the basics things needed.

Options for Students to Study in Canada with ND/HND

Being an ND or HND holder does not make you unqualified to study abroad, with both diplomas you are qualified to apply for a graduate certificate program.

B.    Statement of Purpose

This part is where you sell yourself. like how you are fit for the program, why you want to study the course, your goals, why you are choosing the specific school, your professional background ad experience, and how the program will help you in achieving your goals.

You can reach out to our professional teams for a well-written statement of purpose and guidance.

3.    CVs/Resume

Your CV is where you will show proof of all your professional experience, academic, and research. Make sure all your experience fits the program you are applying to. note that every school in Canada has a template of how a CV should be written. Google can be of help here.

4.    Letter of Recommendation

This document is very important for your application. Here your referee should be someone who can asses your ability for graduate study and is able to state your potential to excel if granted admission.

Before submitting the name of your referee confirm first if they are able to write the letter individually.

They should be someone that can write most things about you like; your leadership traits, social attributes and extracurricular activities, your academic performance when they taught you, your ability to write and speak English fluently, how you handle work and life, and how you work well with others, name some projects you both have worked on before, they should also state everything that makes you qualify for the program.

5.    How will you Fund your Study in Canada?

Studying abroad expenses such as tuition, living, and accommodation will cost you a lot of money. Also, you will need to show your financial standing (proof of financial support)  to the visa consulate before your visa can be approved.  the required funds for a Canadian study visa are at least your first-year tuition, this will depend on the program/school you applied to, and CAD 10,000 for living expenses. if you want to know more about the total amount of money you and your family will need to study in Canada kindly visit the IRCC websites here.

Therefore in a nutshell what will cost you to study in Canada is the total tuition plus living expenses as explained above.

How you can fund your study:

  • Personal savings
  • Universities scholarship (internal)
  • External scholarship (individual/NGO/government)
  • Grants

In Canada, students can be offered a scholarship with the offer letter but is strictly based on merit. However, you do not have to apply for a scholarship separately.

6. When and How do You Intend to Apply to Study in Canada?

Firstly to start your admission processing, you will apply directly to the university/college of your interest. You will find how to apply for each program on the school portal.

It is time to submit your application as soon as possible. you can process your application earlier to give admission, funding decision, and visa application.

In Canada, there are three intakes for international students, fall, winter, and summer. So applications for the fall term which is September are to be processed as early as August/September of the previous year through January/February of the resumption year.

If you want to fast-track your admission processing starts early, and confirm the deadlines to submit the application and then apply.

All the admission processes are strictly online, even the application fees are to be paid online, including the submission of the necessary documents such as the electronic and scanned copies of the transcript, certificates, and any other document as required on the school portal.

After your admission has been approved and the letter of acceptance has been issued, you might be asked to provide original copies of your results. if you’ve come this far, you have done well now you know a few things about studying in Canada, admission requirements, documents, requirements, possible sources of funding, etc.

If you have been offered a letter of admission and you are planning to apply for the study permit, kindly check the Canada immigration portal here or contact our professional team to help you through the process.
